Samsonite StackIt 2-piece Softside Luggage

This is a luggage set with a combined size of 30 x 22 x 14. Both of the suitcases feature spinner wheels to provide decent mobility. It also features heavy-duty metal zippers which reduce the likelihood of any damage to them, which has been a common complaint with some other Samsonite luggage models.

This is a luggage set that can last for years, and that gives it a big advantage as many do not make it that far. It is also a good choice for anyone who wants to use multiple cases for different purposes without having to take up a lot of space.

Pros
  • This stackable duo is great for long-haul trips where more needs to be packed
  • The spinner wheels are very good quality and provide extra maneuverability
Cons
  • The packing space inside the actual cases is quite small
  • The pockets do not run the full length of the lid
  • The structure of the wheels take up some of the interior space

What Makes Samsonite Bags Different?

Samsonite has existed since 1910, when they were founded in Denver, Colorado. This means they are a brand with a long history of providing great products to their customers, which of course includes softside luggage, one of their main product ranges.

They now trade in over 100 countries and have a most recent annual revenue figure of more than $3.5 billion, which is a testament to their popularity and the trust that people place in them. A company founded only last year or even in the last decade just wouldn’t be able to build up the same track record as Samsonite.

They have also been responsible for numerous innovations in the world of luggage and bags, which makes their softside products some of the best available.

Another key feature of all Samsonite products is quality assurance. It wouldn’t be possible for them to maintain a strong reputation if their products weren’t as good as they claimed. So they have ensured that all of their luggage is tested whilst being at full capacity.

Their luggage is also tested in challenging environmental conditions and exposed to hazards that mimic those which frequent travelers are most likely to experience. One of the important tests for softside cases is their ability to withstand rain and accidental spillages, which could seep through the fabric if they are not protected against them.
A Samsonite product can only be sold if it passes testing with the highest standards. This is why Samsonite has coined the term Worldproof to describe their luggage. It is some of the best on the market. In addition to this, Samsonite offers a series of warranties to guarantee their products and give you peace of mind when you purchase one. There is a permanent global warranty, a 10-year global warranty, and a 3-year global warranty. These only include manufacturing defects rather than any damages incurred through misuse or by accident. However, this does ensure you won’t have to live with a faulty product, as Samsonite will repair it for you through the warranty. You can request a repair by visiting their website. This ensures that you always get only the best quality.

What to Consider When Buying Samsonite Luggage?

Samsonite currently lists a wide variety of different softside luggage products on their website, and it is important for you to know which one is best. Softside luggage comes with some special features that don’t apply to hardside luggage, as you will discover.

Without being aware of these, you may choose a suitcase that does not meet your needs in the way that you thought it would. So here is a list of what you should consider when buying softside luggage.

Versatility

There are many ways to travel in the world today. This includes going by boat, on foot, by plane, and by train. This means you need luggage that can fit just about anywhere. And that’s what Samsonite softside luggage can do.

The portable nature of these cases is a result of the fabric allowing you to compress them into a variety of spaces no matter the weight. Other suitcase types take up the same amount of space regardless of what you put in them.

However, softside models are more malleable, so you’re able to squeeze them into tight spaces more easily and also squeeze more luggage into the suitcase itself.

Flexibility

Softside luggage from Samsonite generally comes with an expandable section that allows you to fit extra belongings inside when you really need some extra space, which you don’t get with hardside luggage. This feature is great for when you need to travel across long distances and take plenty of items with you.

You may also go on vacation and spot some souvenirs you’d like to bring back with you. If the space inside your luggage was strictly fixed (as it is in hardshell models), then this would be a problem. But with softside Samsonite luggage, chances are you’ll find a way to fit it inside.

Trip Type

When people travel, they generally do so either for leisure or for business. Both of these trips are very different from one another. On a holiday, you can take as little or as much as you want. But on a business trip, you will probably need to make room for special equipment and clothing.

This means the size of the luggage you require will vary. Whether you should opt for a carry-on, mid-size, or large suitcase will depend on the type of travel you typically take. Or you can do what I did and just buy one of each!

Luggage Wheels

And finally, you will want to choose whether your suitcase will be a roller or a spinner. A roller means having two wheels, and a spinner means having four wheels. Rollers will only move backward and forwards, whereas spinners can move in all directions.

Rollers are typically better for uneven surfaces like sidewalks, but they can be difficult to pull along if the suitcase is heavy. Spinners exert less pressure on the shoulder and are easier to maneuver because of the extra pair of wheels.

But their wheels can be vulnerable to snapping off, and if they are being used on steep terrain, they can roll away quickly. So if you do pick a Samsonite spinner, it is best to opt for one with a locking mechanism.

Luggage Mistakes To Avoid

When you’re traveling, it can be easy to cause excess trouble for yourself even if you’ve chosen the right piece of luggage. Here are a few common errors that you’ll want to avoid so that your journey is as enjoyable as possible, regardless of whether you are traveling for business or leisure.

Not Inspecting the Luggage

It is fine when you see a picture on the internet and the promise of quality when you order, but the real test of good luggage is whether the actual object itself meets the standards that Samsonite says it will. And that test shouldn’t be the first time you use it on a plane.
You’ll want to look carefully at all the most fragile components as soon as the suitcase is delivered. There are four of these. The zips, the handle, the spinner wheels, and the seams. Zips can get jammed and detached, handles can get stuck, wheels can break off, and the seams stitching together the fabric on softside cases can get damaged.
None of this should be happening with a brand new suitcase, especially not one from Samsonite. Make sure you look very closely, feel it, and then test it by filling it up and walking around your neighborhood with it.

Straining the Fabric

In the rush to get ready for a trip you’re going on, there will no doubt be a long list of items you’d like to take with you. Sometimes this can become such a priority that you forget it won’t all fit in the suitcase. When this happens, it can be tempting to put as much in as possible and force it to close.

However, even with the more forgiving softside cases, this is not a wise choice to make, because they can only expand by so much with or without a special expandable section. If you push them beyond their capacity, the added weight and pressure could cause the seams, that hold together the sides, to split open on even the best suitcases.

Buying the Wrong Softside Suitcase

As you will now know, there are several important factors involved in choosing the best softside suitcase, and not all of them are interchangeable.

But if you aren’t aware of these factors, or choose based on your best guess, this could be a potentially costly mistake, because if it cannot meet your needs in terms of how you’re traveling, the conditions you’re traveling in, and the amount you’d like to pack, then you won’t enjoy using it.

Softside cases are best when they have spare compartments on the front and some expandable space inside. That allows them to be more useful for emergencies where you haven’t got much time to carefully organize everything and need the extra space.

Conclusion

When it comes to softside luggage, Samsonite is hard to beat. With a wide variety of bags to choose from, it can be a daunting task to choose just one. However, if we had to choose the best Samsonite luggage from the list above, we’d have to go with the Samsonite Solyte DLX luggage.

Its features, like the USB port, give it a modern touch that the others lack, and it is guaranteed for 10 years. It has a main compartment with various types of pockets and double spinner wheels, which are useful for when you’re doing a lot of traveling.

It is a high-quality, stackable, and durable piece of Samsonite luggage which make it a great choice that we’re sure will last you for years to come. However, whichever bag you decide to go with, you can’t go wrong when you go with a Samsonite.

Amex Gold Card Retention Offers

Amex Gold Card Retention Offers

  • By Anthony Dominguez
  • Last Update: June 13, 2020

The Amex Gold Card is a premium credit card with amazing perks and benefits for everyday use. One of the biggest reasons people enjoy this card is that they offer 50,000 membership rewards points with just $4,000 minimum spend within the first three months.

Moreover, you receive card perks such as 4x membership reward (MR)  points on restaurants and supermarkets, 3x membership reward points on flights booked directly through Amex Travel Express, $120 dining credit per year, and a $100 airline fee credit per year.

The annual fee is on the lower end compared to other premium cards, at $255 annual fee. If you can hit the minimum spend on the welcome bonus combined with points and dining benefits, the value of your credit card will exceed what you’re paying. Not to mention, you can possibly have your first-year annual fee waived!

With the recent COV-19 pandemic plaguing our world, businesses are closed and traveling isn’t safe. Rather than going through another year of paying a high annual fee to maintain this card, you may want to consider asking for a retention offer to receive additional membership rewards or statement credit toward your annual fee.

What is a Retention Offer?

A retention offer is when card issuers offer the cardholder extra incentives to encourage them to keep their card open instead of canceling or closing their account. These incentives often are membership rewards such as bonus points, cashback, or statement credits.

Credit Card companies just like any business have the goal to retain their customers by keeping them happy.  Typically, retention offers are given to cardholders looking to cancel their card or close their account.

Retention offers exist because credit card companies realize that keeping a customer by throwing in extra bonus points or waiving a fee is much easier than spending money on advertisement to acquire new customers.

Pro Tips to Get a Retention Offer

Here are a few pro tips we suggest to follow if you’re looking to get a card retention offer from American Express.

Call the number on the back of your card

I suggest calling their customer service line during business hours between 8 am and 6 pm. After business hours, American Express typically uses international reps who may not know all of the details. You also won’t be able to receive a retention offer from their online chat.

Get transferred to the Retention department

Only the team working in the retention department can make the offer. When you first call you might start the conversation with something like this. “Hi, I’m thinking about canceling my card. The annual fee is higher than I’d like and I’m not sure if it’s worth it for me.” If they transfer you to the retention department, that’s perfect. If not, simply ask them to transfer you to their department.

According to Flyer Talk, the direct line to the retention department is 800-452-3945. And their hours of operation are 08:00 -- 23:00 Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday.

Good Reasons to Cancel

When you’re on the phone with the retention department, you want to make it sound like you’re still unsure whether or not you should keep the card you already have. Here are a few good scripts you can follow to ensure the best chance for getting a retention offer.

  • “Hi, I just saw the annual fee posted, and I’m not sure if the card benefits can justify the cost of the fee. Do you have any retention benefits or is there any way to waive the annual fee for the first year, so I can keep the card?
  • “Currently, I have other premium cards from different card issuers such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve. (List any premium charge card) I’m not sure if the benefits on this card are worth it for me.”
  • “I have the Amex Platinum Card and I don’t know if it’ll be worth paying two high annual fees to keep this card open.” (only use this reason if you have the Amex Platinum Card)

It’s okay to ask them for a better deal if they don’t suggest retention offer themselves. The worst thing they could say is no.

Call a Few Times

Not all customer service reps will be fully transparent with you. Sometimes you’ll get a more favorable response from other reps. If you don’t get reviewed approved, simply hang up before they proceed to canceling your account.

Call again another time of day or a few days later. Repeat the steps above and try calling them three to five times. Don’t call them every few minutes as they probably can track it.

Different Types of Retention Offers

Retention offers can really sweeten the pot for those who receive lucrative offers. Here are a few common retention offers we’ve seen out there based on the Reddit churning communities and Flyer Talk forum.

Bonus Points

Similar to the welcome offer, American express may offer you bonus points for a minimum spend. Here are a few examples we’ve seen that have been reported by Amex Gold Card users.

  • 30,000 Membership Reward points for $4,000 spend within the next three months
  • 20,000 Membership Reward points for $3,000 spend within the next three months
  • 15,000 Membership Reward points for $2,000 in spend within the next three months
  • 10,000 Membership Reward points for $1,500 in spend within the next three months

Statement Credit

Statement credit is when card issuers offer money credited to your account which reduces the amount of money you owe this year. In the case of the Amex Gold Card, we’ve seen them cover up to 80% of your annual fee. Here are a few examples of the Amex statement credits we’ve seen from reported users.

  • $200 statement credit with $6,000 spend in 3 months
  • $150 statement credit with $3,000 spend in 3 months
  • $100 statement credit after $2,000 spend in 3 months
  • $100 statement credit with no spend requirement.
  • $75 statement credit after $1500 spend in 3 months

We Pick Up the Tip

One of the superior features about the Amex Gold Card compared to other premium cards is their perks of dining out at restaurants. With this offer, American Express will offer you 20% cashback on restaurants up to $225 or $150. The name of this offer is quite fitting since the average tip is about 20% at restaurants.

In terms of value, you’re getting quite a large cashback percentage, however, since it’s only limited to dining, most cardholders value bonus points instead.

Amex Gold Retention Offers - Insights & Patterns

There isn’t a one size fit all when it comes to a retention offer. Generally, if you’ve already received a retention offer from American Express last year, you won’t receive one again this year. However, you may get a retention offer every other year.

After scanning across multiple forums of cardholders sharing their personal experiences about Retention Offers, we wanted to share our insights to help you increase your chances to get a high offer. There doesn’t seem to be an exact science or algorithm to be reviewed approved, however, there are a few indicators we believe to improve your shot.

Increase Spending in 4x MR Categories are Correlated to Higher Offers

It only makes sense that American Express would favor those who spend more money using their Amex Gold credit card. Any business would reward their top paying customers. This makes sense because American Express charges retailers around 3% of each sale, so heavy spenders are very attractive to them.

In the data points, we’ve seen that people who spent $20-$25k spend on their card per year were more likely to see the higher offers of $30,000 points for $4,000 in spend in 3 months.

Skewed Reporting

Although we’ve looked through many customer experiences, it’s likely those who have received no offers or lower offers wouldn’t want to report their Retention offers.

Previous Retention Won't Disqualify You

According to the AskSebby Community, there were 221 Amex Gold Cardholders who shared their personal experiences; only 9 reported to have a previous retention offer from American Express. Out of the 9 individuals that did have a previous retention offer, 4 of them got another offer.

Obviously, this is an incredibly small sample size, but it still goes to show that it never hurts to ask! Looking at the offers made, it seems that around 88% of surveyors reported being reviewed approved for an offer.

Age of Card Does Matter

We also noticed in these data points that the age of credit card can affect your chances of getting a higher retention offer. Those who only had this credit card for 1 month typically received lower offers such as 15,000 points for $2k spend in 3 months.

While those with an age of 1 year or over were more likely to see higher offers such as 30,000 points for $4,000 spend within 3 months. It’s better to have longer card retention to show American Express, you’re a loyal customer. When asking for an offer, you can even tell them you’ve been a long-time customer and would hate to leave.

A Second Call Doesn't Equate to Higher Offers

We’ve seen across multiple data points that second calls don’t usually result in a higher offer made by American Express. This is probably because the offers made are tracked each time.

There aren’t any definitive guarantees you can make from the data points presented by cardholders. However, it’s safe to say, owning your card longer and having a higher spend will positively affect the offers you receive.

We don’t see any instances where a person is penalized for having a high spend on their credit card. But there are outliers where people who haven’t spent much still received generous offers.

Should you Keep the Amex Gold Card?

Now it’s time to weigh your options. You have to crunch in the numbers to see whether or not the rewards exceed the value of the annual fee. If it doesn’t you should not keep your card open anymore. Also, consider the alternative credit cards you might be able to acquire that would be a better fit for you.

Does Rewards Outweigh Annual Fee?

To cover the annual fee of $250, you need 35,000 Membership Points to equal $250 in value. In my opinion, if you’re able to cash in on the 50,000 points given during the welcome bonus, you’ve already exceeded the cost of annual fees to keep your credit card open for another year. Just for context, if you didn’t hit the sign-up bonus here is what’ll need to spend to exceed the 35,000 points.

  • $4,000 spend on Restaurants (4x points)
  • $4,000 spend on Supermarkets (4x points)
  • $1000 spend on Flights booked through Amex Travel (3x points)
  • $1000 spend on other purchases (1x points)

The total spend is $10,000 within 12 months and equates to 36,000 membership points. Use a points calculator to gauge whether this card would be right for you. If you have passed Year 1 of owning the card, you have to ensure your future spend is worth the membership benefits. It’s important to remember that these purchases are ones that you’re already planning to make.

In other words, you aren’t spending thousands of dollars extra to just hit the required welcome bonus. Otherwise, that wouldn’t be worth your money. If you can’t exceed this spend, then we recommend getting a lower annual fee card by downgrading or a simple cash back credit card where you can earn a desirable cashback rate without the annual fees!

Your Priorities

At the end of the day, deciding whether or not to keep a card depends on your priorities. If you’re someone who prefers travel benefits, you may want to deploy your resources using a card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve which gives 3x points on travel.

This credit card is geared towards restaurant and supermarket shoppers since you get 4x points on up to $25,000 per year spend.

However, in my opinion this card is quite easy to maintain. Without taking points into consideration, you can easily rack up $120 in dining credit, $100 in airline fee credits (spend on checked bags, in-flight refreshments, etc) and a $100 hotel credit when you book through American Express Travel. In total that’s $320 in value.

Amex Gold Card Alternatives

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is easily the most talked about in the credit card churning community. With this card, you have a hefty annual fee at $550, but the perks are very worth it.

Within the first three months of opening your account, you get 50,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 within the first 3 months.

For context, this is worth $750 towards airfare, hotels, cruises, car rents when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards. The card comes with 3x points on travel and dining worldwide which is slightly less compared to the Amex Gold.

However, you get $300 annual travel credit and 50% more in travel redemption. There’s no doubt that Chase Sapphire Reserve is more suitable to traveling while Amex Gold favors rewards on dining.

Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

If you’re into spending in the categories of dining, grocery shopping, and entertainment, then this is an excellent alternative to the Amex Gold Card.

The Capital One Savor offers 4% cashback on dining and select entertainment and 2% back on grocery stores.

To make things better, this card has an annual fee of $95. In terms of cashback for dining and entertainment, this card is one of the best in the market.

For its welcome bonus, you receive a $300 cash bonus with a minimum of $3000 spent in the first 3 months. If you can spend $10,000 on this card per year, at 1% cashback, you’ll easily cover your annual fees.

Discover It Cash Back

If you’re the person who enjoys cashback over earning points, then the Discover It Cash Back card might be one of the best options for you. This card has a $0 annual fee, meaning that there isn’t much of a risk or downside.

Cardholders can enjoy 5% cashback on purchases on select categories such as restaurants, grocery stores, online shopping, gas stations, and ride-shares with a quarterly maximum of $1,500.

After hitting $1,500 in cashback, you’ll still earn unlimited 1% cashback afterward. And at the end of your first year, Discover matches the cashback you’ve earned, so you get to double your earnings!

You may even find a welcome bonus such as earning a $150 bonus after spending only $500 on purchases in the first three months.

Let’s say you spend a modest $5,000 per month using this card with a 5% cashback in the required select categories. You’ll earn a total of $6,500 at the end of your first year which includes the 5% cashback, Discover it match feature and the $500 welcome bonus!

Cancelling the Amex Gold

Remember to use up all of your Membership Rewards before canceling the Amex Gold. The other option is to downgrade or transfer the points to other Amex cards such as the Amex Green, Amex Platinum, Amex Everyday or the Amex Blue Business Plus.

Conclusion

Retention offers is an excellent way to squeeze out more benefits from the Amex Gold than originally given. For most people, it’s like getting a mini-welcome bonus again! American Express has a history of being quite generous with their retention offers, so there’s a good chance you can gain additional benefits.

If you don’t get offers, don’t worry. There’s always a chance to try again down the road, downgrade your card or simply replace the Amex Gold with another alternative. Don’t let another year go by without getting any retention offers!

FAQs

If you didn’t get a retention offer, there’s really only two possible choices for you. One is to pay the annual fee to keep the card. The other option is to cancel the card and use up the bonuses before closing your account.

If you decide to keep your card, don’t give up on your chances of getting a retention offer. Credit card companies may just want to see you spend more money on their card year after year.

Yes, you can. In this case, downgrading would allow you to get the Amex Green Card. This card still gives you quite favorable rewards with a slightly cheaper annual fee. This card gives you 3x membership reward points on restaurants, transit, and travel.

It also has a sweet sign-up bonus giving you a whopping 45,000 membership rewards points once you spend $2,000 within the first 3 months of opening your account. The annual fee is $150. Using the AMEX calculator, we can see that 50,000 points is worth about $350 in regular spending money, but $500 of travel if booked through American Express Travel.

If you can hit the minimum spend, you’re easily making back way more than the annual fee just from the first three months of using the card! We think it’s worth the downgrade if you choose to do so.

Generally, Amex does not waive their annual fees. However, it never hurts to ask! Just like card retention offers, based on the amount you spend on your Amex card, the length of time you’ve been a cardmember, and other factors, they might be generous to waive it off. Or you could receive a statement credit to give you partial credit towards fees.  In the end, most customer reps want to help you keep the card you already have.

And the best thing about hardside luggage? They have sleek looks which not many carry cases can match. That means if you want your carry to be the center of attention whether you’re at the airport, in the hotel lobby, or waiting for a tube, they have got you covered.

Best Hardside Luggage in 2020 – Buying Guide

Finding the best hardside luggage can be a very daunting task. To make it seamless for you, this buying guide lays out the criterion of selecting the best suitcase for your needs.

Material of Construction

Following are the three most common materials you’d see in hardside luggage:

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is an amorphous polymer that displays excellent transparency which makes it easier for the luggage manufacturers to convert it into multiple colors and patterns.

More importantly, it has brilliant impact resistance, can stay strong in the face of high/low temperatures, and is flexible. This means that if you put pressure on polycarbonate, it will bend before coming back to its original shape.

ABS

Compare it with polycarbonate, and you’d come to realize that ABS is the lighter of the two. It rivals its counterpart in impact resistance, ease of processing, and high heat distortion as well. And guess what? It is the cheaper of the two.

Unfortunately, though, as far as durability is concerned, ABS cannot rival polycarbonate. That’s why most luggage makers combine ABS with other materials to turn it make a stronger carry case.

Aluminum

Eager to do some weight-lifting while you’re on the road? Then the aluminum luggage might suit you better. It’s the heaviest of the three materials we have discussed here but is also the most durable.

Its back pain-inducing weight is the reason why aluminum-made luggage isn’t the most popular. Also, if you’re a frequent overpacker, this luggage might not be the best for you as it isn’t flexible.

Size

You’d find most suitcase manufacturers offering these three sizes across their ranges:

Small size

Generally measuring around 22 x 18 x 10 inches, small-sized hardside luggage items deserve your attention if you want your suitcase to fit inside the overhead bin of your mode of transportation. Though it should go without saying that they aren’t the best choice if you’re going to pack for a month on the road.

Medium size

Medium cases generally measure between 25 and 27 inches. Although you cannot fit them inside the overhead bin, their limited dimensions (neither too small nor too large) allow you to pack the necessary items for a weeklong trip. This way, they’d save you from paying additional weight fees at the airport.

Large size

If you’re planning to be on the road for a long time, large size cases, generally measuring around 32 to 33 inches, might be worth a shot. They usually are more rugged than other sizes and can, therefore, take more abuse. Though they aren’t the most travel-friendly.

Number of wheels

You have two choices when it comes to the number of wheels that would carry your luggage:

4-wheels

Also known as spinners, four-wheelers are the easiest to navigate in tight corners. They won’t put much stress on your shoulders as their weight distribution is much better than their 2-wheel counterparts.

On the flip side, having so many wheels might make these luggage bags challenging to maneuver on rough surfaces, from cobblestone to grass. Also, you need to be vigilant when you park them on a slope, or they’ll be running away in no time.

2-wheels

Despite being less expensive than their 4-wheel colleagues, the two-wheel luggage cases tend to provide more storage space. They are a must-have if your trip is going to force you to walk on lots of uneven terrains.

Unfortunately, while four-wheel hard suitcases are easy to push in front of you, the reverse is true for two-wheel luggage. So you’d have to apply more force to drag it from behind you.

Must-have Features

If you wish to choose the right hardside luggage for your needs, you shouldn’t compromise on these features:

Multiple compartments

Go through our recommendations, and you’d realize that most of them have numerous storage compartments. That’s because having separate sections makes packing gadgets, accessories, and other valuables a cinch. Provided you haven’t used a luggage case before, you’d marvel at the convenience that is on offer as a result of compartmentalization.

Well-Engineered Zippers

Your luggage’s zipper is its gateway to the world – one which you’d like to remain closed most of the time if you aren’t too fond of having to pick your clothes off the airport’s floor. You should be able to set the zipper back into its body when it’s shut. This would make it sturdy enough to withstand any break-in attempts by wannabe thieves.

Telescoping handle

During our research for this article, we came across this fact: the telescoping handle is the best friend of a traveler. They withstand several falls and can be quickly slotted away once you aren’t using them. Also, since they have a super-smooth opening/closing mechanism, you won’t have to expend too much effort.

TSA-approved locks

Whether you’re going to travel by plane or by bus, TSA-approved locks are a must-have on any luggage item.

These units can be opened by the agents of the transport authority should they feel the need to check your luggage, but they are almost impregnable to damage or theft. Some cases provide them in the package, while others require you to purchase TSA lock separately.

Lightweight and durable, PC, as it is known among frequent travelers, won’t let much get past it and inside this luggage.

Once you have this hardside expandable spinner packed up and locked, you won’t have to worry about the security of your items. Only two persons in the world – you and the TSA agent – can get past its TSA-approved locks, with its zip security giving this luggage an added layer of protection.

Open up its zipper to stare at the marvel of compartmentalization. The bottom-facing side contains a divider separating two zippers, which are big enough to store your clothes. Two more zippers are on offer on the front-facing side, of which the upper one can be used as storage space for documents.

Provided you have no problem with its looks, this hardside luggage ‘s functionality will surely prove its utility in your eyes. It features a spacious zippered-interior that is built for the overpackers with its zipper divider panel, an accessory pocket and an elasticized hold-down system.

Spinner wheels and adjustable handle

Cons

5. DELSEY Paris Helium Aero Hardside Luggage

You can’t guess by looking at its exterior that the Helium Aero Hardside Luggage is one of the most inexpensive on the market. This product’s exterior is polished with a deep metallic finish, which does well to minimize the appearance of scratches. Its double spinner wheels have a 360-degree rotating action and allow its users to slalom this luggage through tight spaces with ease.

Despite being hardside, this checked luggage features an expandable interior that stretches by 2 inches to accommodate those items which you purchased at the last minute. The lid-side features a packing compartment with a zippered divider to help you organize things better.

Once you have stored your items and closed this luggage, there aren’t many persons in the world who would be able to open its 3-dial, TSA-approved locks. Also, the fact that its interior is fully-lined means it won’t be giving way anytime soon.
Pros

Fully-lined interior

Cons

Hate running out of storage space when packing items for your next trip? Don’t have the budget to spend over-the-odds on an ultra-wide product? You won’t encounter either of these problems with the competitively priced AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage.

In contrast to other hard shell suitcases we have seen thus far, it has ditched polycarbonate in favor of ABS. The latter is no doubt heavier than PC, but it is also more sturdy. You can expect it to handle more abuse, resist scratches better and hold up better over an extended period.

Similar sturdiness will be on display once you open up this carry-on. The interior is fully lined-up and has a vertical divider to let you organize your items. Three internal zipper-pockets have enough space to store your keys and other smaller items.

Air travelers would have no problem fitting this hardside suitcase in their overhead cabin as its 21’’ size is acceptable to most airlines. 7. Coolife Luggage 3 Piece Set

Similar to other hardside carry-ons that you see in this review, the Coolife Luggage 3 Piece spinner Set comes with a retractable handlebar that makes it useful for people with different heights. Unlike some of them, it also features side handles which would let you lift this hardside luggage over uneven surfaces.

Of the three pieces that are offered in its set, the lowest has a 38L capacity and will easily fit inside the overhead cabin of most airline service providers. The other two, which can pack 60L and 93L of your luggage, will need to be put away in the boot.

That the interior is fully lined means this product won’t become a victim of premature tears. Though one area where this hardside luggage could have done better is its 2-year warranty. No matter how you look at it, it’s nowhere near enough.
Pros

Silent 360* wheels

Interior mesh zip pocket

Fully-lined interior

Cons

Short 2-year warranty

8. Kenneth Cole Reaction Out Of Bounds Carry On Suitcase

Just like the Samsonite Omni Expandable, the Kenneth Cole Suitcase is also available in three different sizes. It is this characteristic of this suitcase which would appeal to you whether you are going away for months or would be back home after the weekend on the beach.

Nothing about the interior or the exterior of this hardside luggage raises many questions about its durability. The storage compartment is fully lined to prevent any premature tears. The outer surface, meanwhile, sports corner guard reinforcements, which would absorb the impact in the event of an impact.

Overpackers won’t have any trouble stuffing this suitcase with their luggage. Its interior is neatly (and equally) divided by a divider to allow double-sided packing. You can use its garment restraint straps to prevent your clothes from falling out, whereas its zipper-pocket will keep valuables like keys inside.

The test which we’re talking about involved this material driven over by a 2000kg weighing truck. Impressively, the material suffered little damage and came out smiling at the other end. That should tell you everything you need to know about its durability.

It seems to us that its manufacturer was trying to prove a point when checking this product’s ruggedness. That can only be why it forced this luggage to undergo three 20, 50lbs rolling tests, 20, 50lbs single wheel drop tests, and 1000, 50lbs handle inspections.

Little wonder, then, that you get a 5-year international warranty on this luggage. It is equipped with an anti-UV interior which would prevent the harmful sunrays from aging its shiny exterior. So you can expect this luggage to stay with you for years to come.
Pros

Incredibly durable

Has a 5-year warranty

Anti-UV exterior

Cons

Doesn’t have TSA lock

10. Ben Sherman Nottingham Suitcase

Provided you like smooth-rotating wheels, eye-catching exterior, and rugged hardshell, you won’t find any reasons to complain about the Ben Sherman Nottingham Suitcase. It is supported by dual, 360-degree rotating wheels which make navigating this suitcase around a crowded space a breeze.

One glance at its interior will let you know that it has enough space to hold all the things you hold dear during a journey. There is a mesh zipper pocket to store your keys, two storage compartments on both sides to hold all your clothes and a tear-resistant lining to keep tearing at bay.

Apart from that, the side under the lid features a U-shaped zipper pocket, which is separate from the mesh-zipper pocket we discussed in the previous paragraph. Depending on the size of your valuables, you can store the bigger ones in the U-shaped pocket.

You also get four molded feet with this product, which allow it to stand upright on its side. Also, impressively for a suitcase large enough to store all your essentials, the Ben Sherman Nottingham Luggage comes with a market-high 10-year warranty.
Pros

Stands upright without any support

A plethora of organized compartments

Water-resistant hard shell

Cons

Weighs Heavy

11. Rockland Melbourne 20″ Expandable Hard Abs Carry On

One thing is guaranteed you decide to go shopping for the Rockland Melbourne Expandable: it will spoil you with its impressive color range. This best hardside luggage is available in 32 different colors, so it has something to offer from the most conservative to the most fashionable user.

Therefore, while the color which you’re looking at falls in the conservative category, you don’t have to fall for it unless it’s your favorite. The range of colors is so immense that whether you’re going to the Paris Fashion Week or an office trip, they’d compliment your travel’s purpose.

You would appreciate its sporty exterior more once you go through this luggage’s functional interior. After all, what use is a carry-on for if it can’t pack enough items? Luckily, with the storage space that it does offer, it won’t only be the looks of this expandable spinner that you’d appreciate.

On its inside is an elasticated pocket that is expandable to accommodate the needs of overpackers. Two storage compartments, one on each side, are big enough to hold items for a week-long trip. Two top handles (telescopic and lifting) plus durable spinner wheels make maneuvering it a breeze.
Pros

Huge color range

Made of ABS

Boasts expandable capacity

Cons

No outer pocket for luggage tags

12. Nautica 3-Piece Hardside Spinner Luggage

Elegance is the word that comes to mind once you look at its exterior for the first time. Its navy-colored outer shell in combination with the orange wheel caps and the black handle make sure that nobody would bat an eye if you place it in the middle of a busy hotel lounge.

Such a design choice has its benefits. The dark exterior means that without being scratch-resistant, this carry-on spinner would easily hide the abuses it might have gone through. Also, as not many bags sport this combination, you could quickly identify your suitcase amid scores of others on a luggage belt.

Maneuvering this hardside suitcase is going to be a cinch on both even and uneven surfaces. It comes with four spinner wheels whose 360-degree rotation allows them to tiptoe around tight spots. The top and side carry handles, meanwhile, let you lift this luggage over the surface, which might be too rough to bypass.

Pros

Top and side carry handles

Push-button handle

Expandable by 2’’

Cons

Expensive

13. Goplus 20″ Expandable Carry On Luggage

There’s nothing about the exterior of this carry-on luggage that is going to convey that it would break down tomorrow. Its durable ABS outer shell, metal pull rod, and scratch-resistant and waterproof external layer would all keep this luggage going for years.

Most other hardside carry-ons come with corner pads to protect the luggage. The Go Plus 20’’ Expandable, however, has a smooth corner that will protect you. Its surface is of a rubbery texture that would absorb bumps, thereby not hurting your foot if/when you bump into the corner.

Even when it’s packed to the rafters, the four carry wheels will make it easy for you to move around this luggage. They would be aided in their mission by the telescoping aluminum handle. This way, you won’t have any problem crisscrossing this luggage around a busy airport.

Pros

Smooth corners

Telescoping aluminum handle

Multi-directional wheels

Cons

No mention of any warranty

14. Olympia Apache Ii 21″ Carry-on Spinner

In contrast to the other standard hardshell luggage bags that you see on the market, the Olympia Apache has a slightly different design. The center of this carry-on has a hidden compartment that would allow you to store away items such as briefcases, laptops as well as headphones.

The best thing about this hidden compartment is that it has no bearing on the uprightness of the whole bag. You could have the carry-on fully packed, and there would still be space in the hidden compartment for you to tuck away things that are most valuable to you.

That’s not all as its interior has two zipped pouches big enough to store all your documents. The compartment under the lid has a garment restraint strap, which you can snap together via its buckle once you have placed all your clothes under it.

Pros

Competitive pricing

Hidden storage compartment

Internal divider and buckle straps

Cons

Flimsy zipper

15. American Tourister Moonlight Hardside Luggage

If you’ve ever wondered why American Tourister is one of the most popular luggage brands in the world, this hardside suitcase will let you know why. It contains two spacious inner compartments that are expandable to provide you with extra-storing capacity.

Also inside its main zipper are two large compartments for you to tuck away your laptop, clothes, and similar items. Effortless maneuverability is all but guaranteed thanks to its single spinner wheels, whereas the retractable handle would suit people of all sizes.

Lastly, it has been the hallmark of American Tourister to use a combination of ABS and Polycarbonate in its luggage bags. That’s why this bag features a unique-mix of lightweight and rugged construction, which means its compact dimensions won’t expose it to damage anytime soon.

Pros

ABS and PC construction

Comes with a 10-year warranty

Push-button locking handles

Cons

The exterior isn’t scratch-resistant

Conclusion

Whether you are a frequent traveler or only venture out of your home once every few months, the best hardside luggage items have everything to be your perfect travel companions.

These are durable models with an eye-catching design and provide enough storage space for all your belongings. Add to the equation their budget-friendly cost, and they’d be a nice addition to your travel itinerary.

Read on to know more about the best kids luggage in 2020.

Scour the internet for the best luggage for your child, and you’d be astonished at the variety of the products available. Inevitably, you’d be faced with a set of questions whose answer will steer you towards one product or the other.

Questions to Ask

Here are some questions you’ll ask yourself when finding the best luggage for kids:

Hardshell or Softshell?

Hardshell

Hardshell carry bags have a rugged structure that protects fragile items from any damage. They also provide better protection against inordinate weather and can handle more abuse. So you might want to choose them if you air travel frequently.

On the flip side, while they can handle more abuse, hardshell bags won’t make any attempt at hiding the scratches. The resulting lines on their exterior would mar their appearance. Also, since they aren’t made of flexible material, there’s a limit to how many clothes, snacks and other accessories they can store.

Pros: Protect fragile items; better resist abuse; keep moisture at bay.

Cons: Prone to scratches; not the most lightweight

Softshell

One of the major reasons why some parents prefer softshell bags is because of the extra pockets and storage compartments that their flexibility allows them to offer. That makes it easier for your kid to store their food and snacks in separate compartments.

However, while they’re lightweight than hardshell compartments, that would no longer be the case if you stuff them beyond capacity. That, in turn, would make them difficult to carry. And if you’re planning to jet to your vacation destination, make sure your airline allows soft luggage, as most don’t.

Pros: Extremely flexible; loads of storage compartment and patches; lightweight.

Cons: Susceptible to overstuffing; not the best for air travel.

Backpack or Suitcase?

Backpack

Backpacks are a must-have if your vacation is going to involve a lot of walking in the countryside. The absence of any paved roads means that carry-on suitcases won’t be any good in these areas. Also, since they have straps to divide the weight, backpacks won’t be difficult to carry.

Unfortunately, not everything is hunky-dory about backpacks. Unlike carry-on suitcases which allow you to pack as many items as you may want – since you just have to push them along, backpacks can overburden your child and might also result in back pains.

Pros: Easier to carry; a good option for smaller trips; only for lightweight accessoriesCons: Not for extended vacations.

Kids Suit cases

Provided you’re planning to go on an extended family vacation – or your kids have their plans to pack their entire room in their bag – carry-on suitcases will suit them just fine. The fact that they’d have tires to roll over would make children suitcases easy to carry with minimal effort.

Kids Suitcases might not be the best choice for a kids’ luggage if the surface you’ll be eventually rolling it on isn’t going to be smooth. Also, we have seen some products whose skate wheels just jam, causing the carry-on suitcase to tip over. Pay proper attention to wheels and that the suitcase can standalone unassisted.

Pros: Great for extended vacations; can carry as much stuff as you wantCons: Wheels might break down due to rough use

Must-have Features

Following are some of the features on which you shouldn’t compromise:

Strong zippers: People who often travel know that zippers are one of the weakest points of their entire luggage. There’s nothing frustrating than to try and fix a zipper when the airport flight announcer is inviting people for boarding. So make sure the luggage has a strong zipper.

Durable construction: Whether you choose a hardshell or softshell luggage, make sure that it’s durable. The best way to ensure that is checking the products warranty period, as products that are insured for longer periods tend to withstand more abuse.

Multiple storage compartments: Are all your kids’ toys the same size? Of course, they aren’t, which is why you should get them luggage with multiple storage compartments. That would allow your kids to easily store all their snacks, accessories, games, sports goods, toys and other packing materials for the trip.

Front pocket: Unless you are planning to spend the entire vacation reading books to your toddler (which is the best way to spend a journey), getting themselves a carry-on suitcase with a front patch would allow them to have their own books for company.

Top grab handle: Whether you’re going to choose a lightweight suitcase or a backpack, never settle for a product that doesn’t include a top grab handle in its design. It makes the entire structure easy to lift and pull in case the shoulder straps or wheels give way.

Telescopic handle (optional): If you plan on buying a carry-on suitcase, a telescopic handle is a must-have feature. It will allow the child to adjust the height of the luggage as per their needs.

Multi-directional wheels (optional): Suitcases with multi-directional wheels are a cinch to navigate through crowded spaces. Your kids won’t have to apply too much effort in maneuvering them through tight spaces.

Best Luggage for Kids in 2020

1. Skip Hop Kids Suitcase Luggage With Wheels

The Skip Hop Kids luggage is one of those products which aim to attract the kids with their cute design. Also, apart from its beautiful aesthetics, this luggage has the storage options as well as ultra-portability that make it a practical option for your kids.

Features

First things first, this product won’t leave your kid beseeching you to make space for their clothing in your luggage. It has a front patch which is large enough to hold documents and has mesh pockets on both sides that could easily store all the sports goods of your cute little one.

Apart from its kid-friendly design, another thing which would convey to your child that this luggage set was made for them is its little size. They might also appreciate the fact that the unit features a write-on name tag, using which they can make it their own.

Its sturdiness is such that you can count on it to withstand abuse. The poly-canvas fabric used in its construction is heavy-duty and free of any seams. You can stuff it above capacity, and there still won’t be any danger of it ripping at the corners.

Lastly, it is equipped with a retractable 13-inch handle that makes carrying this unit a cinch. Its multi-directional wheels play an equally important part in making this unit ultra-portable. However, if there ever comes a time when your child gets tired of using it, you can use its removable strap to carry it yourself.
Pros

Has a front-access pocket

Side mesh pocket

13-inch retractable handle

Removable strap for parents

Cons

Slightly older kids might take exception with its relatively small size

2. American Tourister Kids Softside 18″ Upright

Since American Tourister is a brand famous for its adult luggage, you won’t need any convincing to believe that its kids’ luggage will be durable and long-lasting. In fact, had it not been for its slightly above-average price tag, we see no reason why anyone would ignore this unit.

Features

One glance at its front-face will make it clear that this upright bag aims to target the girl child. The mosaics of princesses on its front pocket means that not many boys will like to receive it as a gift. Though its availability in other colors means that even boys can take advantage of the features of this luggage set.

And what are those features? The most noteworthy among them, as far as the sturdiness of this product is concerned, is its polyester-lining. You might have heard horror stories from your fellow colleagues about how the big they gifted to their toddlers ended up fraying at the seams.

Its heavy-duty polyester-lining would save you from such fate. Similar is the case with its zippered closure which is tightened at both ends to ensure longevity. Also, since the luggage has a standard 18 inches size, it meets the size recommendation of those airlines, earning brownie points from air-travel-lovers.

Apart from its external zippered area, which is big enough to store large clothing, there’s an internal pocket to compartmentalize your storage items. The interior also contains cross straps with which you can secure the breakables. Its easy-pull handle and inline skate spinner wheels ensure easy mobility on most surfaces.
Pros

10-year limited warranty

Has inner cross straps

Large mesh pocket

Rigorous and sturdy zipper

Cons

Pricey

3. Goplus 2Pc Kid Luggage

Does your little one like to have lots of colors in their life? That’s one reason why they might like the extra-cheerful exterior of this unit. The amalgam of blue and black elephants amid yellow inscription and white background makes it a must-have for color enthusiasts.

Features

Starting with the best thing this model has to offer, and its hard clamshell construction stands out. The mixture of ABS plastic and polycarbonate composite has lent toughness and hardness to this unit’s exterior, thereby allaying any concerns parents might have about their kids’ luggage durability.

While most hard clamshell luggage bags are prone to scratches, this one is a bit different. Its manufacturer has provided covering the luggage set from head to toe with a PC film. That layer, in turn, helps this model to keep scratches and lines at bay.

Kids of different heights won’t encounter any problem using this luggage because of tis 3-level adjustment telescopic handle. It also features adjustable shoulder straps that allow this luggage to accommodate kids of different body builds.

Kids won’t have any problem navigating this unit because if its 360-degree rolling spinner wheels. Their four-direction movement will allow the users of this bag to slalom it through tight spaces. Its interior, meanwhile, has multiple storage compartments to let you store more clothing and sports goods.
Pros

Waterproof surface

360-degree rolling spinner wheels

Two-way smooth zippers

Scratchproof protective film

Cons

Might be too colorful for some kids’ liking

4. Trunki Original Kids Ride-On Suitcase and Carry-On Luggage

Assume for a moment that you’ve reversed the clock and gone back to your childhood days. Wouldn’t you like having a lightweight suitcase which you can physically ride through the airport? Of course, you’d not let anyone take it away from your eyes for a second. That’s the effect this ride-on suitcase is going to have on your teens.

Features

Most children would like the 2-in-1 functionality of this carry-on luggage. It has two carry straps at the top to let anyone carry if the bag isn’t filled beyond capacity. Conversely, if you’ve packed the bag to the rafters, your child can simply ride on this model, and carry it to the destination.

The multi-functional strap has other uses beyond letting your kid use it to carry the luggage. Parents could even turn it into a tow strap. Provided your child is tired to even ride it, you can use the strap to tow the luggage behind you, with its wheels making sure that it rides along.

Opening up the bag would reveal three storage compartments. The biggest of them is secured with a cross strap. We recommend that you use it for securing perishable items or notebooks. The second one, located on the right side, is compact but can still hold all the clothes.

As for the one close to the mouth of the bag, it provides enough space to store towels, a water bottle or clothing. It’s because of this compartmentalization that this luggage boasts 18L capacity, which is huge by any definition of the word.
Pros

Carry-strap doubles as tow-strap

Has an internal pocket

Massive 18L capacity

Patented secure catches

Cons

Flimsy hinge

5. Stephen Joseph Rolling Luggage

Want to give your child something similar to what you had back when you were of their age? Then you might want to give them the slightly-reserved Stephen Joseph Rolling Luggage. Its dark designs won’t stand out from the crowd but it’s the other features of this unit that make it special.

Features

If you want to have a clue of how sturdy this model is, turn it around. The bottom of its retractable handle is protected with a soft nylon fabric which is as durable as it’s stretchable. No amount of predictable pressure will be able to rip it off and expose the handle to damage.

Similar is the case with its front side. The bottom of the interior compartment is protected by 2 layers of durable nylon. There’s also the extra shield in the shape of the front pocket. All this talk about this model’s heavy-duty fabric means your kid would have to be incredibly churlish to damage it.

We were also impressed with the two carry options for this luggage. Your child can use the upper carry handle if the weight of their books is within their lifting capacity. Or, if they have packed their entire wardrobe for the next vacation, they could use the retractable handle to swiftly carry it along.

The fact that it has an approved size means that most airline service providers won’t trouble you at the airport. Its two side zipper pockets offer enough space for stationary, whereas the main front pocket, as well as the roomy interior compartment, is big enough to house clothes.
Pros

Airline approved size

Accessible exterior pocket

Double-lock retractable handle

Durable polyester exterior

Cons

Interior doesn’t have any cross straps or compartments

6. Yodo Zoo 3-Way Kids Rolling Luggage

Of all the best luggage for kids that you’ve seen thus far, the Yodo Zoo 3-Way is by far the most inexpensive. However, that doesn’t mean that any shortcuts were taken in this model’s design and construction. It features the same quality materials which you can find in other units in this review.

Features

How can we be sure no corners have been cut to keep this unit’s price low? Because we know that it is made of 600D polyester and 210D polyester lining. While the former makes the entire unit fraying-proof, the heavy-duty lining would protect this model whenever you overstuff it with essentials.

Apart from its meager price tag, versatility is one of the strong points of this rolling luggage. You can use it as luggage, a backpack, and even a handbag. That’s because this bag has different carrying options – a telescopic handle, carry handle, shoulder straps – to compliment your child’s needs.

Kids can use the spacious pocket at its front to quickly store and access their snacks and toys. They can also use the mesh pockets on both sides to house their bottles. Also, since the front pocket has a 2-direction zipper, its user can open/close it from both directions.

Lastly, we’d be doing a disservice to this bag if we don’t talk about its interior. It contains zipper pockets to help your child secure their books. That’s a pretty handy feature given the fact that you usually expect it from product’s costing twice as much as the Yodo 3-Way.
Pros

Padded back panel

Interior zip pocket

Two side mesh pockets

Spacious storage area

Cons

Spinner Wheels aren’t multi-directional

7. American Tourister Disney Kids Hardside Upright Luggage

Did you come here in search of the best luggage for your child? Can you afford to pay whatever it takes to land such a model? If you find yourself nodding to both these questions, only then you should move ahead and consider having the excellent features of this astronomically-priced sports toys luggage.

Features

Perhaps it’s the construction of this model which justifies its otherwise inexcusably high price tag. The combination of ABS and polycarbonate shell means that this luggage can handle whatever your kids are able to throw at it – and come out unscathed out of the whole ordeal.

Think we’re bluffing here? Then you probably don’t know that this model comes with a market-high 10-year warranty. People who are in the business of luggage themselves will tell you how rare it’s to find a model whose model will take responsibility for its workmanship for such a long time.

Beneath the cross straps which secure the contents of your luggage, this model has a book opening case divided by a mesh separator. The result is two equal-size compartments where you can store notebooks, stationery, toys and books. And that too in neatly demarcated sections.

The space between the double-compartments and the cross straps can be used for storing clothes, towels, and valuable items. The opening side of the rolling bag, meanwhile, has dual direction zippers securing yet another storage area that is large enough to store the remaining items in your traveling itinerary.
Pros

ABS and polycarbonate shell

10-year limited warranty

Side-mounted skate wheels

Cons

Astronomically expensive

8. Disney Pixar Cars Rolling Lightning McQueen Suitcase

If your kid loves Disney movies and spends a better part of his leisure time either watching his favorite cartoon characters on the screen or imitating them in your living room, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get the Disney Pixar Cars suitcases for kids.

Features

One of the most notable features of this suitcase is the usage of high quality materials in its construction. Their presence empowers this model to better withstand wear and tear, while it also maintains its shape even when you overstuff it.

As your kid might be able to tell, the external designs of this suitcase is modeled on the Lightning McQueen from the Cars’ movie of the Disney Pixar franchise. Apart from attracting kids, its designs won’t pose you any problem as you try to locate this bag on a conveyor belt.

Did we just mention conveyor belt? We did that because we know that the 17’’ x 11’’ x 6 inches size of this suitcase meets the rolling luggage requirements of most national and international flights. However, if you’re traveling for the first time, it would still be safe to consult with your operator.

Its main compartment sports two zippers to let your child open it from both sides. Space inside is big enough to accommodate notebooks, drawing books and other stationery. And its position means that your child won’t have any problem accessing the items inside whenever they feel the need.
Pros

Double-zipper front pocket

Aesthetically pleasing designs

Easy-to-carry handle

Compact dimensions and light weight

Cons

Spinner Wheels are of suspect quality

9. MiniMAX Childrens Trolley Cabin Suitcase/Backpack

The MiniMAX Childrens Trolley is a no-frills child suitcase that has sacrificed its looks for practical and functional features. That means that while you won’t find anything extraordinary about its cute design colors, the storage and durability of this model’s materials won’t give you any reason for complaint.

Features

Your child will have three options with which they could carry this suitcase. The first, and our favorite, is the 2-position telescopic handle which will let them glide this trolley across paved surfaces. However, if the surface isn’t up to the mark, they could just use its adjustable straps to convert it into a backpack.

Perhaps that’s the reason why this trip suitcase doubles as a school bag. It also has three external pockets of varying sizes to store items of different shapes. Foremost among them is the outermost packing space whose small size limits its utility for pens, pencils, and USBs.

Next is the medium-size pocket which is secured by two zippers and can store a folded piece of paper. Those of you who want to store something bigger can use the third, and the final, external pocket. It also has a double zipper-like its medium-size counterpart but provides enough area to store a clipboard.

As turning the bag around would show, there are more external storage options. Space, where the handle retracts to its lowest position, has a zipper with enough space for small stationery items. Beneath it is a large pocket where you can easily store notebooks. So you won’t run out of space with this product.
Pros

Five external pockets

2 spinner wheels

Has adjustable straps

Features a telescopic handle

Cons

Doesn’t have the cutest design

10. PUQU Monster Truck Design Toddlers Travel Suitcase With Wheels

As its users know by now, the PUQU Monster Truck Toddlers Travel Suitcase is a wheeled-carry on whose other purpose is providing enough storage space to young travelers. It doesn’t offer the biggest storage area – only 18L – but makes up for this shortcoming with its kids’-friendly design and ultra-portability.

Features

Did you know that the Monster Truck Suitcase offers storage and fun opportunities at the same time? Those of you who want to take a look at the former need only open its top case. True, space inside won’t be huge to the liking of most of us, but it can still house enough items for a weekend trip.

As for its fun-loving part, the fact that it comes with four tires means your child can easily convert it into their very own Monster Truck. They won’t have to use their feet to slide it along as this unit features a durable shoulder strap which lets the parents tow their kid along.

Towing isn’t the only purpose of the ‘shoulder’ strap. When the fun time is over and your child is ready to go back to school, they can use the strap to convert this unit into a backpack. You won’t have to worry about the tires poking into your child’s back as they would be on the external-facing side.

Lastly, in contrast to some of the rolling luggage whose popularity is limited to either boys or girls, this one enjoys an excellent reputation among both. Its bright yellow design makes this rolling luggage suitable for both, so you don’t have to worry about whether your child would like its design or not.
Pros

Durable ABS construction

18 liters storage space

Doubles as a stroller

Compact dimensions and pleasing colors

Cons

Doesn’t have the cutest design

11. Travel Buddies Rusty Robot Luggage

What is better than having travel luggage for your little one? Travel luggage which offers a separate backpack in its package, and that too at no extra cost to the consumer. So if you’re one of those persons who rarely miss ‘buy-one, get-one’ deals, you might not want to miss on the Rusty Robot kids Luggage.

Features

Let’s begin our review of the Travel Buddies with a look at its luggage. It’s made of durable ABS and features hardshell construction to withstand abuse and wear-and-tear. No amount of poking would force the outer shell to give way and let the damage proceed to the inner compartment.

While it doesn’t have anything to offer in terms of external pockets, opening up the luggage would reveal three separate areas. The biggest among them is secured beneath cross bands and you can use it to store clothes, food, towels and similar accessories. The other two are beneath the front side and secured by a zippered area.

Having discussed what the luggage is all about, it’s time we turn our attention to the backpack. There’s nothing to differentiate as far as the construction is concerned as both feature the same ABS hardshell construction. That’s a good feature to have as not many soft backpacks can handle abuse.

You don’t get any tires beneath the backpack but it does have three inner storage compartments. The absence of cross bands on the inside is compensated by providing two vertical bands. They are under the front-facing side of the backpack and would do well to secure smaller items.
Pros

ABS hardshell construction

Dual height retractable handle

Smooth-rolling tires

Cons

Too small for children aged 6 or above

Conclusion

Having led you through the various luggage that are available for kids in 2020, we can now say with certainty that the Skip Hop Kids Luggage With Wheels is the best of the lot. With its 13’’ retractable handle, easy-to-maneuver wheels and shoulder straps which let you convert this luggage into a backpack, you won’t have to make any compromises if you end up choosing this unit.

And, if you would like to avoid fees for overweight suitcases, start by purchasing a lightweight set. The difference between regular suitcases and low weight bags can easily be several pounds. With these thoughts I mind, we would like to provide you with a bit of useful information about the best lightweight luggage in 2020 for your budget.

How to Find Best Lightweight Luggage in 2020?

So, you are already convinced that you need to replace your previous heavy, old suitcase, large and musty, with a new low weight suitcase, large, attractive, and clean! Where do you look? What do you look for? What criteria do you use in choosing the best lightweight luggage for your travel needs?

Then there is the issue of cost. Can you afford those elegant low weight suitcase offers that you have your eyes on? In this case, we suggest that you ask yourself if you can afford not to buy a set of low weight bags that will make travel easier for many trips to come!

Comfort in your travels, ease of packing, easy storage, strong material, and extra features like side pockets of belongings that you need to get at as you travel are all important for any trip. And, there are plenty of bag types to choose from including a huge selection online.

Where Should You Look for Lightweight Luggage?

A good first place to look when buying lightweight luggage is Consumer Reports. Do this to get a good idea of what you are looking for and how to proceed. When you are ready to look at some merchandise, there are several options. Any number of “big box” stores and department store carry travel bags and accessories.

The drawback to this approach is that your options will be limited and you will typically pay more than if you shop online. The best online site for a wide selection of low weight bags is Amazon.com. Start by thinking about what you need. That will make picking the best lightweight luggage in 2020 as easy as possible.

What Do You Look for in Lightweight Luggage?

When you look for low weight luggage choices, what else do you need to be concerned with?  For most travelers, having suitcases that stand up to the punishment of repeated trips and manageability are the two most important factors.

You want something that weighs less but you also want a bag that the baggage handlers at the airline or the bellboy at the hotel will not immediately destroy because of vulnerable material!

The other feature that most travelers find most important is how easy their bags are to move through airports and other places on a trip where distance is involved.

Durability of Your Luggage

The main durability issues with these necessary travel articles have to do with zippers, wheels, handles, and the sides of the bag.

Zippers

When considering how durable your bags or backpack will be, start with the zippers. There are two types of zippers, coil and chain. Coil zippers are usually polyester and slide on a set of parallel coils. Chain zippers are metal and consist of sets of teeth that interlock.

The stronger and more durable zipper is the chain type. They are harder to break into than the coil type which can often be opened by forcing a ball point pen in between the two sides of the zipper on your bag!

Wheels

Next, consider the wheels. There are two issues here, how well the wheels are made and if you are getting a two-wheeler or four-wheeler. If you are buying in a store, simply check the wheels to make sure that they stay in place and roll smoothly. And, when you handle them, the wheels should be attached firmly.

If you are like me, you love the way that four-wheel luggage rolls along in the airport. The first think to check with this wheel type includes how well they are attached to the luggage.

Because they are mounted externally, they are more subject to damage than internally-mounted two-wheelers. Wheels that are attached with screws are less likely to weaken during your travel and get loose than ones attached with rivets.

When you expect to be navigating uneven streets and similar rough terrain in your travels, consider buying the two-wheel type. The wheels are recessed and not likely to break off or weaken. And, because they simply roll frontward or backward, instead of in all directions, they will wear and last longer with rough use.

Handles

Another durability concern is the handle on your bag or backpack. Make sure that it does not rattle or wiggle when you handle it. Retractable handles are nice in that they are less prone to damage from sloppy baggage handling but check that the handle moves smoothly as you pull it up for use.

Hard Side or Soft Side

And, the last durability concern is if you go with hard-sided or soft-sided bags. If you want the best in protection against cuts, tears, in perforations from sharp objects, hard sided is the way to go.

However, hard-sided luggage is typically heavier. Aluminum is generally the most durable; but, you will find it hard to get a low weight set without buying smaller bags. When choosing soft-sided luggage, that will last, go with a dense fabric. And a nice feature of low weight, soft-sided luggage is that you can always pack in “one more thing.”

Then, of course, you end up defeating your purpose of traveling light with low weight luggage on your trip! Look for a Denier rating which tells you how thick and tough the fabric is.

Mobility

The main reason that you are buying a bag that is light in weight is that it is easier to carry, move, and travel with. You obviously want a handle for when you need to carry it.

But, since most affordable luggage these days comes with wheels, you need a handle that pulls up or retracts into the bag as needed. While the handles on the sides of luggage are generally pretty secure, the slide-up and retract-down handle on the exterior can be troublesome.

Things you can do to make sure the handle will not immediately separate from your luggage the first time at you use it are to pull out the handle and pull the suitcase around a bit. Pick up the suitcase using the pullout handle too. This is generally a “no-no” as you should be using the side handle for carrying your bag.

But, (not a big secret) pretty much everyone picks up their luggage at some time or other using the extension handle. If you have not checked this out you may have an experience like a dear friend of mine.

She got dropped off in front of Penn Station in New York City, in a rush to catch a train and found her extension handle waving in the air as her four-wheeled suitcase rolled back into the street! Moral of the story: check to make sure that the pull-out handle on your luggage is secure!

One occasional drawback to having four-wheel luggage is that it may not stay in place when left on a slanted surface.

This will not be an issue at your hotel or the airport, but if you are lugging your luggage around a city with hills (think San Francisco and Russian Hill), you will need to remember to place your suitcase on its side whenever you stop or you may be chasing it downhill!

What Is the Best Lightweight Suitcase in 2020 for Me?

This is the question that you want answered, isn’t it? The answer has to do with how often you travel, where your trips take you, how complicated your trips are, how long you want your luggage to last under expected use, and how easy packing it is.

And, of course you want to consider if you will be carrying your bag or always paying a porter, bellman, or taxi driver to do the lifting for you.

It makes no difference if you travel a lot or a little if you want to avoid carrying heavy luggage around with all of your belongings. Either way, you want quality luggage. Differences have to do with how often you use the luggage, how much wear and tear it gets, ease if packing, and for how long you want it to last.

And, don’t forget the useful extra things like attached tags for your name, address, and email address or secure locks (ideally TSA compliant). Handy side pockets for your electronics are also great.

There are many excellent American bag manufacturers and excellent foreign manufacturers like Delsey as well. The right offers for you will be the size you need in the colors you like for your trip with convenient features for travel on a budget or even travel with just a backpack.

Best and Lightest Suitcases for Frequent Travelers

A well-made (and generally more expensive) checked bag, carry-on, or backpack will typically last longer. Hard-sided luggage will outlast soft-sided luggage when treated roughly by baggage handlers, porters, or you. The trade-off that people confront is that you are adding weight with hard-sided luggage.

A well-constructed set of quality bags will have handles, wheels, and zippers that are more secure and likely to endure years of use. When you tighten down interior straps, your belongings will not rattle around and get damaged and your favorite outfit will not end up being torn or stained by leaking liquids.

The best lightweight luggage, taken care of, will last for years. Simply paying attention to a few details will also allow your luggage to endure more years of frequent travel. If your luggage has a guarantee and it is still valid, use it when a zipper, handle, or wheel needs to be fixed.

You need check luggage and bags that go easily into overhead bins. And, they need to fit into your available storage space as well or better than your previous ones.

It is always a temptation to pack “one more thing” for your trip. But, an expandable bulging suitcase puts stress on the seams of the fabric and the zipper.

Many times, putting things in the side pockets is a better way of packing a checked bag. If you are carrying liquids in your luggage, make sure they are enclosed in one, two or three plastic and sealed bags (with the air squeezed out before you close them).

Liquid spilled in your luggage may not shorten its useful life unless it so badly stains the fabric that you refuse to use it.

If your luggage has plenty of extra compression straps and other gear, it can help with packing but they can flap loosely around the outside. Make sure they are secured as these “loose ends” are common reasons for luggage to be damaged in baggage conveyor systems.

Best Lightweight Luggage for Occasional Travelers

Just because you do not travel a lot does not mean that you should not buy good luggage for your belongings and take care of it. All of the suggestions for frequent-traveler luggage apply for the occasional traveler as well. One issue that occasional travelers have that frequent travelers don’t need to worry about is storage.

Putting a plastic bag (large garbage bag) over each of your pieces of stored luggage will keep them from accumulating dust. And, be sure to store you luggage in a cool and dry place.

You don’t want to take your luggage out of storage once a year and then have to wipe off the mildew or deal with the moldy smell that will permeate your clothes when you are vacation!

To the extent that a nice checked bag has complex locks or a difficult-to-manage extension handle, infrequent travelers may wish to avoid it as they will probably forget the lock’s combination from year to year or manage to damage the handle with improper use.

Personal Preferences for Luggage

Despite everything that we have written, it will be your luggage and you should purchase something that you will like, enjoy using, not find difficult, and use year after year.

It should have enough good features, including plenty of convenient extra space for carrying your belongings including articles like a backpack for day use and a good lock to keep your things safe.

Plenty of exterior pockets are also important for easy packing. So, take our suggestions as just that (suggestions) and now order and buy what you like on your budget.

Warranties for Luggage Are Important

When looking for the best lightweight luggage in 2020, investigate the warranty.

First of all, when something breaks during the period of the guarantee, you can get it fixed. Secondly, a multi-year guarantee that covers pretty much everything is a good clue that the manufacturer stands behind their product and has made something that will, indeed, give you good service for years to come.

If you were disappointed by your previous guarantee, consider sending an email to the manufacturer to request assurance.

What Is a Lifetime Luggage Warranty?

The best warranty is a “lifetime warranty.” This guarantee usually covers everything, included damage inflicted by sloppy baggage handling, or five years. After that, the guarantee will only cover defects in workmanship and sometimes just defects that affect the function of the luggage.

The first important part here is to read the agreement and make sure just how good the terms are. Don’t just rely on the sign next to various luggage offers. The second part is to make sure that the warrant applies to the model that you are buying and not the “top of the line” model of that brand.

Frommer’s has a nice article and slideshow of luggage with lifetime guarantees. They also stress that you need to read the fine print regarding interior and exterior coverage as some manufacturers provide lifetime guarantees and others reduce the coverage so badly after a short time on your bag that their promises become meaningless.

Practical Aspects of Finding the Best Lightweight Luggage in 2020

When you make any purchase in life, there is always a trade-off between spending an excess of time and energy researching the best suitcase and saving time by purchasing from one supplier where you can see numerous options in one place at one time.

Some folks just want to replace the previous clunky old luggage they have been dragging from city to city for years and don’t have the time or energy to do a lot of research. This is why they choose the comfort route and go to the “big box” store or their favorite department store and buy the best one from what is in stock.

One of the better choices is to look online. Here you will find a large selection of light-weight luggage. With this thought in mind take a look at our reviews of the best lightweight luggage choices in 2020.
